Why Influencers Should Always Charge for Photos & Videos
If you’re an influencer or content creator, you’ve almost definitely received that message:
Hint: You’re Not a Free Stock Library
“Hey lovely! We absolutely love your content. Could you just snap a few photos and maybe a quick video for us? No budget this time… but LOTS of exposure!”
Ah yes.
Exposure… the currency that pays exactly zero bills.
Let’s get one thing straight: your photos and videos are a service, not a favour. And brands know it. They just hope you don’t.
So let’s unpack why you should always charge, and why what you produce is on par with (and often better than) hiring a professional photographer.
You’re Not Just Taking a Photo, You’re Producing Content With Intent
A brand isn’t just getting a picture. They’re getting:
If they hired a professional photographer for a shoot, they’d pay hundreds, if not thousands, plus a separate fee for usage rights.
Meanwhile, influencers are often expected to do all of that… for a free candle and a “Thanks babe!”
Nope. Not today.
Brands Forget Photographers Charge Licensing… Influencers Should Too
As an ex-professional photographer myself (one who knows the industry inside-out), let me spill some truth:
If a brand commissioned a photographer to create images the way you do?
They would:
Usage rights alone can run anywhere from £150 to £2,000+ depending on the brand and the campaign.
Influencers casually handing over full commercial usage for a gifted product?
It’s basically giving them a designer handbag for the price of a supermarket tote.
You’re Not “Just Taking a Pic”, You’re Also the Model, Stylist, Creative Director & Editor
In a traditional shoot, a brand would budget for:
When they come to you, they magically expect one person (hi 👋) to do everything… for free. The maths ain’t mathing.
Your Content Converts… That’s Worth Money
Most brands don’t hire photographers for conversion. They hire them for imagery.
Collaboration should be exactly that, collaborative. And when an influencer says, “This won’t work for my audience,” brands need to listen. Because forcing the wrong kind of content doesn’t help anyone.
Influencers create:
Brands know influencer-created content sells, that’s why they’re chasing you for photos and videos “on the side.”
If your content helps them make money, then your content should cost money.
Charging Sets Professional Boundaries (and stops cheeky requests!)
Once you put a price on your skills, suddenly the “quick favour” requests disappear.
Brands respect creators who respect themselves. And the ones who don’t?
Let them go buy a £1,200 stock image subscription instead. They’ll be back. They always come back.
UGC Is an Entire Industry Now… And UGC Creators Charge
User Generated Content is booming, and brands are:
UGC creators who don’t even post the content can charge £250–£1,000+ per set of photos or videos. So why on earth should an influencer, who ALSO brings an audience, be doing it for free?
Spoiler: they shouldn’t.
You’re Worth More Than a Discount Code
Being an influencer today means wearing 12 hats and doing the job of an entire marketing team in your living room, usually while your dog wanders through the shot and your kids ask where the snacks are.
You’re not “lucky” to receive gifted items. You’re a creator whose content has real commercial value.
So the next time a brand slides into your DMs asking for:
Just smile sweetly and send your rate card. If they wanted free content, they could’ve used AI.
Charge your worth. Trust me, the professional photographers already are..
