Renovating a 1950’s Bungalow

Reflecting on the past decade, it’s astonishing to think it’s been ten years since we first set foot into what we then called ‘Beechins’. Looking back, the transformation of our 1950s bungalow, spanning 850 square feet, is nothing short of remarkable.

From a neglected structure that seemed hesitant to embrace the future, we’ve fashioned a dwelling that still ignites excitement in visitors when they realize its identity. Our decision, upon acquiring this ‘Fixer Upper’, was clear: we refused to prolong the renovation process over several years. While Mr. C may argue that we’ve been incessantly working on the house, the truth is that in the past two years, we’ve concentrated on redecorating and infusing the interior with the quintessential North American/Canadian ambiance that the exterior exudes.

How much did the Bungalow Cost

We paid £279000 in 2014 for the old rundown bungalow

What’s it worth now?

Not sure, we did have it valued in 2016 when we considered selling it, but since we’ve decided its our forever home we aren’t that interested in knowing.

Where did you live during the Reno?

We lived in the house during the reno! I would not recommend it, but it worked for us! I am not sure our builders would agree.

LET’S CONNECT

“Home is what you take with you, not what you leave behind.”

Did you have any disasters?

Yes, we did, we sacked both the first Groundworker and Main Contractor, as we had no confidence that they would be able to build the house, in time and on budget.

Did you work with an Architect?

Yes we worked with a local company called JPD Architecture who are based just down the road in Boughton Aluph.

Who Was the Builder?

We finally went with Lancaster Builders (Kent) Ltd, and we were pleased with how the project came together with the timescale that we set.

Anything you would have done differently?

That’s a tough question… there is always something that you would have done differently, but at the time we did what we could afford to do! However, one thing I wish we had done is a Mug Room (they always look fab when you see them on Instagram)!
