Exploring La Coruña, A Hidden Gem on Spain’s Atlantic Coast

Where historic charm meets ocean breeze… fall in love with Galicia’s coastal gem.
If you’ve never been to La Coruña, let me be the one to put it firmly on your travel wishlist. Nestled on the wild, rugged coastline of northern Spain, this city completely stole my heart, and to be honest, I wasn’t expecting it to.
We stopped in La Coruña during our cruise, and although it wasn’t one of the ports I was most excited about, it turned out to be one of the biggest surprises of the trip. Isn’t it funny how that happens?
“La Coruña isn’t just a PLACE you visit, it’s a place you FEEL… Sea breeze in your hair, history beneath your feet, & that slow, soulful charm that stays with you long after you LEAVE.”
A City of Surprises
La Coruña (or A Coruña in Galician) feels like the perfect mix of old and new. One minute you’re wandering through grand, historic squares and the next you’re strolling along the beachside promenade, watching the Atlantic waves roll in. It’s got that slightly windswept, coastal charm I absolutely love, think Brighton or St Ives, but with tapas and better weather!
The old town is full of winding streets, little cafes, and gorgeous architecture. I couldn’t help but admire all the beautiful balconies, many of them glass-fronted and full of plants, which I later learned are called galerías. They give the city such a distinctive look. It’s no wonder La Coruña is nicknamed the “City of Glass.”
The Tower of Hercules
One of the real highlights for me was visiting the Tower of Hercules, the oldest working lighthouse in the world. Yes, you read that right, it’s been guiding ships since Roman times! We walked up towards it and the views out over the Atlantic were absolutely breathtaking. If you ever go, wear comfy shoes, it’s a bit of a climb, but totally worth it for those panoramic views.
Beaches and Coffee Stops
The beaches here really took me by surprise. We had a stroll along Praia do Orzán and Praia de Riazor, both right on the doorstep of the city. I couldn’t get over how clean and beautiful they were, with soft golden sand and those dramatic waves crashing in.
After a wander, we found a little café along the seafront, where I sat with my coffee, watching locals surfing and families enjoying the beach. It reminded me why I love coastal cities, life just feels a little more relaxed by the sea.

Tapas, of Course
No trip to Spain is complete without tapas, and La Coruña didn’t disappoint. We tucked into pulpo a la gallega (Galician-style octopus), fresh bread, and local cheeses. Honestly, the food alone is reason enough to visit this part of Spain.
Would I Go Back?
In a heartbeat. La Coruña felt authentic, friendly, and completely unspoiled by mass tourism. It’s not flashy or over-the-top, it’s the kind of place where you can just be, soak up the atmosphere, and discover little hidden corners at your own pace.
So if you’re ever planning a trip to Spain, or happen to be cruising along the Atlantic coast, don’t overlook La Coruña. It might just surprise you like it did me.

Final Thoughts
Our visit to La Coruña was just for the day, thanks to a stop on our Virgin Voyages cruise, but what a day it was. Some places leave a quiet mark on you, not because of big landmarks or bucket-list sights, but because of how they feel.
La Coruña had that feeling in spades. From the moment we stepped off the ship, we were welcomed by the soft sea breeze, the buzz of local life, and the sound of street musicians filling the air with music. It gave the whole city this laid-back, joyful energy, like everyone was in on a lovely little secret.
Whether we were wandering through the old town, watching the waves roll in from the promenade, or sitting with a coffee in a sun-drenched plaza, La Coruña felt like a place you could happily get lost in, and part of me still feels like I did.
It might not be the most talked-about city in Spain, but for me, that made it even more special. A hidden gem, quietly unforgettable.
