Transforming an unused space

I’m thrilled to share the transformation of our bookcase area, marking a shift from mundane to marvelous functionality. Stepping into our reimagined sitting room, library, and office space from the main living area, the stark contrast from its previous state is striking.

Originally designated as my office and client meeting space, circumstances changed dramatically in 2015 due to complications from surgery, prompting a redirection of its purpose. As we utilised the sitting room and my makeshift office, a neglected middle space became a catch-all for odds and ends.

Various impractical ideas were considered for its use, including the notion of a mudroom, albeit inconveniently positioned within the house. The area was adorned with standard IKEA wardrobes, a desk, and a console table, lacking character and cohesion.

In late 2021, I resolved to breathe new life into the space with a bespoke bookcase, scouring Instagram and Pinterest for inspiration to accommodate the unique bulkhead constraints.

From BORING to Beautiful!

We were fortunate to discover a skilled local carpenter who not only brought our vision to life but also worked wonders on one of the IKEA wardrobes.

With meticulous craftsmanship, the wardrobe underwent a remarkable transformation. A custom plinth was expertly crafted and installed, elevating the wardrobe to reach the ceiling. Paneling was meticulously applied to the doors, while delicate coving added a refined touch, culminating in a seamless and polished appearance.

To enhance its aesthetic appeal, we opted to coat the wardrobes in Farrow and Ball Paint in the timeless hue of Wimborne White, imparting a sense of timeless elegance. The addition of brass handles provided a subtle yet sophisticated accent, elevating the wardrobe’s overall allure.

Similarly, the bespoke bookcase received the same treatment, professionally sprayed with the same paint color and adorned with matching brass handles, ensuring a harmonious and cohesive design scheme throughout the space.

A new home for my Ginger Jars!

Initially, the intention was to populate the bookcase entirely with books. However, upon seeing the completed transformation, I’ve developed a fondness for the minimalist aesthetic achieved by showcasing my collection of ‘Blue and White’ Ginger Jars. This curated display exudes a Palm Beach/Hamptons Style vibe that resonates deeply with me. Consequently, the additional cupboards now house my surplus books temporarily, while I deliberate on their ultimate fate and how best to integrate them into the newly refined space.

With the space now opened up, the entirety of the area is visible, free from the clutter that previously obstructed the view. This transformation has resulted in a living space that not only feels more functional but also seamlessly integrates with the rest of the home. Our desire for a clean and elegant ambiance has been realised beyond expectations. I am absolutely enamored with this transformation—it truly embodies everything we envisioned and more.
