kitchen Makeover with a Big Impact

Transforming My Kitchen on a Budget

My kitchen makeover is finally complete, and I couldn’t be happier. Over the years, my style has evolved so much, and what once felt modern and fresh had slowly become tired and totally out of sync with the rest of our home. The biggest offender? Our cooker hood. I’d disliked it for the longest time — clunky, outdated, and just there, looming over the hob like a relic from a design era I’d long moved on from.

It wasn’t just the hood either. The cabinet handles had also become a bit of an eyesore, and somewhere along the line, the kitchen became the one room I avoided photographing — a big deal when your life revolves around visual storytelling! It just didn’t reflect me anymore, and it started to feel like a creative block in my own home.

The kitchen is the heart of the home — it’s where memories are made and stories are shared, one cup of tea at a time….

But then, I saw one of my Instagram friends totally transform her kitchen hood — on a budget too! She made it look like something out of a home interior mag, and it gave me the nudge I needed. Or at least, the nudge to get Dan involved and ask him for a quote (because let’s face it, some things are best left to the pros!).

I decided to invest in a Luxair cooker hood, and the transformation was simple yet incredibly impactful. With a bit of reworking to the cooker hood and a fresh coat of paint, the whole vibe of the space changed. Suddenly, the kitchen felt like ours again — bright, fresh, and finally photogenic!

the biggest Change

Frelan Hardware

The biggest transformation, however, came from partnering with Frelan Hardware and updating the cabinet handles. I always knew I wasn’t a fan of the old ones, but it wasn’t until recently that I realised just how bad they actually looked! There were two main issues: first, the kitchen fitter had installed far too many handles on the drawers — and while I’ve had to keep the same placement for now (thanks to those existing holes), the new ones have instantly elevated the look. Secondly, swapping them out wasn’t as simple as I’d hoped because the fitter had used 192mm centres, rather than the more common 160mm that were also an option with the original handles.

After much deliberation, I chose the Frelan Hoxton Range Strut handle with a backing plate in antique brass — and honestly, they’ve completely transformed the feel of the kitchen. Sophisticated, timeless, and so much more in line with my style.

Waste not…

Finally, after recently renovating two bathrooms, I found myself with a few leftover tiles and some offcuts. So, Dan (my builder) swapped out the old green subway tiles and replaced them with the beautiful ones I had left over from Easy Bathrooms — such a simple change, but it made a huge difference!
